The deceitfulness of riches

He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch. (Proverbs 11:28).

We see it all the time how money makes the world go around, yet there are those who money is sadly their main focus, as they store it up and are blind to the fact it cannot give them the peace they are seeking that is only found in the Lord! (1 Timothy 6:17-19) Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

In the book of Ecclesiastes it teaches us of the vanity to labor for the wind, as many will try their best to store up wealth to their own hurt (Ecclesiastes 5:8-20). It is truly a blessing from God for those who work and honestly earn their money, it is when ill gotten gain causes some to try and covet money that another has earned to provide for their family. Those who are destitute of the truth will sadly think gain in this life is godliness, but they are deceived and have fallen into a temptation without realizing it. We are instructed to be content with what we have, for no one carries anything out of this temporary world we are just passing through it! (1 Timothy 6: 6-10) But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

We learn in the parable of the seed and the sower, how the deceitfulness of riches and the cares of this life can cause one to take their eyes off of what is most important. It was one of the temptations satan used with our Lord after He had fasted 40 days and was at His lowest by promising that all the kingdoms could be His if only He would worship him, and he has not changed his ways. (Matthew 4:1-11). (Mark 4:14-20) The sower soweth the word. And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan cometh immediately, and taketh away the word that was sown in their hearts. And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended. And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.

We cannot find better scripture that allows us to see the end of those who trust in money more than in the Lord as found in Psalm 49. (Psalm 49:6-8) They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:). (Psalm 49:16-20) Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him. Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself. He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light. Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
