How wonderful was the wisdom of Solomon, because to this day we can still enjoy his wise words when we read the proverbs he was the author of. Before God gave Solomon all the wealth and wisdom he was known for, he was given a prophetic dream where he was asking God to give him an understanding heart to judge good and bad among Israel. This beautiful passage reads as though it is truly happening, But when Solomon awoke from this dream he went before the ark of the Covenant and made an offering to God, knowing of the impact this dream held!
In solomons dream he humbly asked nothing for himself, but for a heart that could help him to understand with discernment to better judge Israel ( 1 Kings 3:7-10) And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. You can read Solomons entire dream in 1 Kings 3: 7-15.
It was shortly after the dream Solomon was given the decision between two women who had a child and one died and the other took the baby as her own and went before Solomon to make a decision as to what to do. With discernment the following was Solomons just answer (1 Kings 3:24-28) And the King said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my Lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. Then the king answered and said, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. And all Israel heard of the judgement which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.
God’s favour was over Solomon greatly for his wisdom and wealth surpassed all the kings before him and after him. Solomon was a person no different than you or I, as God Himself says we are to follow Him for He is God Almighty and we are not to follow any other god as He instructed Solomon. (1 Kings 9:6,7) But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods, and worship them: Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people.
We see the humanness of Solomon for after all the wealth and wisdom God had blessed him with that temptation entered his life as he turned from serving the one true living God, and served the gods of his many wives which angered God! (1 Kings 11:4,9) For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David. And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned from the Lord God of Israel, which had appeared unto him twice.
We can learn from Solomon that there is nothing God will keep from His children who serve Him, for He keeps His promises and blessings abound. Even today we too are warned to stay with the one true living God as there are blessings for those who love and serve God, and there are curses for the disobedient in the earth (Deuteronomy Chapter 28).
