Who do you call family?

There is no division in the body of Christ, yet there are many separations within the family unit. So how can we say we are of the family of God and yet within our family there are divisions. The question here is who do you call family? We live within two worlds in this life, the one is of the flesh and the other is spiritual. Our Lord has answered this question perfectly for us of who His family are by saying His brethren are those who do His Fathers will (Matthew 12:46-50) While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Scripture teaches us there is an eternal family we can be born into, unlike the temporary family we are all a part of. The true family of God loves the Lord at all costs. Literally the cost of being a genuine christian and not just one who calls themselves a christian because they visit a building for an hour a week, are those willing to give up their life to save it! Our focus should be on the Lord and eternity, and not on the temporary cares of this life (Matthew 16:24-28) Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

For many the thought to follow the Lord seems impossible because it means others will not understand, so we must ask ourselves what is more important to live for those of our family in the flesh that will one day perish, or follow the family of God that will inherit heaven for all eternity? This was a perplexing question for one who asked the Lord if he could go and bury his father first, and then he would follow Him. Our Lord clearly teaches those in the flesh and do not follow Him are dead. So what is most important to you? Do you have an excuse as many do to follow the Lord at all costs and be a part of His eternal family, or have you forsaken all to follow Him? (Luke 9:57-62) And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
