Why would Jesus say He was not of the world? How exactly can we live in the world and yet not be of it? Plainly the ways of the world are different from the way the Lord expects His people to live.
Even the language is different of a believer in Christ compared to the way of the world. Our conversation is of seeing the world through the eyes of the Lord, whereas the world speaks of itself and is heard more! We see this more clearly when people are so focused on what the world deems as most important such as the best car, biggest house, largest bank account and always making sure to be part of all the worlds festivities (1 John 4:4-6) 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.(1 John 2:15-17).
It is not the most popular way of life to live as a true christian, for no one wants to be hated. Jesus let’s us know it is an honor to suffer for His sake, and we are to remember the world hated Him before it hated us (John 15:16-21) 16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. 17 These things I command you, that ye love one another. 18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. 19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.
Praise God our Lord has prayed to the Father for all of us who have chose to follow Him! (John 17:14-26).
