Serve not Strange gods and Other gods

God knew man would have other gods other than Him and made sure to include this in His commandments, which is why our Lord said if we love Him we will keep His commandment’s (Deuteronomy 5:7-10) Thou shalt have none other gods before me. Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

We find early in scripture the need for man to worship and although God would hope it is only Him man will choose, it is at times strange gods that sadly is his choice. Today many are taught God would never turn from anyone, yet the same God Jacob served in his day is the God of our day. Jacob did not mince words when he spoke to the Israelites after they were brought forth out of Egypt and told them choose today whom you will serve. He warned them not to serve the gods of their forefathers (Joshua 24:14-16,20,21) Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods. If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good. And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD.

When the one true living God is not feared as He should be, it is then people serve strange gods which angers the creator of heaven and earth!(Deuteronomy 32:16-21) They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger. They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee. And when the LORD saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters. And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith. They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. (1 Corinthians 10:20).

People today are no different in wanting something to worship as they did so long ago when Moses did not come down from the mountain, we see the people tell Aaron to make them gods and notice it was not just one god, but plural which angered God greatly! (Exodus 32:1-4) And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

Some may think the worshipping of strange gods was only in the old testament readings, but when Paul was in Athens in the new testament we see satan was well at work speaking through the philosophers by twisting what Paul was preaching and saying he wants them to worship strange gods. Pauls message was of course the preaching of Jesus they were speaking of ( Acts 17:16-21) Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean. (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing).

But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion. (Jeremiah 10:10-12).

  2. Yet the children of God thought they were worshiping Him with that golden calf! I always think about this “strange gods before Me” passage when I see X Mass trees in churches, even up on the altar behind the pastor and God’s Word that he is preaching from! Just as we stand before God, we can also bring the strange gods of X Mass with us (or other “gods” He hates) to stand before Him. “No other gods” doesn’t only mean having a love greater than Him but having a love that is equal to Him or that we think is Him. Oh, I can’t seem to explain it…

Great post, sis! Have a blessed day, amen! \o/

    • I understand what your saying, as anything that takes the place of the love we have for the ONE true God is not God at all but a strange god. Idolatry is more prominent than people believe. As I read your comment Isaiah 29:13 came to mind as your saying they have a pagan tree on the altar yet say they are honoring God.
“Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men.”
Blessings and Strength Always Dear Sister.

      • Perfect verse explaining it. So many have been taught the traditions of pagan feast days being holy unto God. Only God can open their eyes; He is not obligated to do so for those who have no love for truth, however. Blessings, sis, amen! \o/

      • Yes as the love of many grows colder, you are so right only God can open their eyes. I have been to that point recently, and as written we must know when to shake the dust off our feet if our message is falling on deaf ears. Many Blessings.
