The pearl of great price is the kingdom of heaven and is the wisdom of God, and when we find it we are willing to sell all that we have to obtain it. So what is the price? It is to daily taking up your cross and although unpleasant willing to be mocked, shunned and reproached for Christ’s sake. (Matthew 13:44-46) Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
This wisdom is so precious in the sight of God that we are instructed not to misuse it nor speak it unwisely among those who are living against its righteous ways. (Matthew 7:6) Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
We have been entrusted with the good news of the gospel, and as the disciples of our Lords day knew it was an honour to suffer for Christ’s sake so do we carry the same message to the world today! (Acts 5:40-42) And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.
The wisdom of God will not be accepted by every person you tell it too, and scripture teaches us to shake the dust off our feet to those who shun the truth of the word. Our Lord did not plead His Fathers word with people by saying but you have to believe what I’m saying, no He merely spoke the truth and some accepted it and others did not. We are not to live our lives in constant turmoil trying to convince others of the word, for His way is a way of peace! (Matthew 10:12-15) And when ye come into an house, salute it. And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
