Before we come to the knowledge of Christ the world around us holds our interest and we unknowingly are a servant to its ways, and serve things other than God such as material possessions, money, lies etc. Once we find the truth in Christ we see the errors we lived in and find now that God knows us, how can we then turn back to the old way of life that is separate from Him? (Galatians 4:8-11) Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods. But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
When we look around today at the condition the world is in with so much hatred, violence and just plain no fear or reverence for God, we find the proud are happy and even wickedness is built up! But for those who truly do love and fear God He says we are His and a book of remembrance has been written. (Malachi 3:15-18) And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered. Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.
How different the world would be if everyone only knew they are known of God (Psalm 139:1-4) O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.
Sadly many live their lives without even considering God knows them, truly He looks down from above to see if there are any who do seek Him (Psalm 14:2) The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. (2 Timothy 2:19).

The “weak and beggarly elements” that the Gentiles were returning to were the pagan ones they were formerly accustom to and not the “Jewish ways” as most teach. Those same pagan ways were later adopted by the Roman Church and are now the heavily embedded doctrines ad traditions of men. Paul’s writing style is so taken out of context!
