As a Christian we love what God loves and hate what He hates. (Psalm 139:21-24). So many who choose disobedience will say we are not suppose to judge and only God can judge, but they fail to read the second verse of Matthew 7:1,2 which teaches us we are suppose to use right judgment in a matter. (Matthew 7:1,2) Judge not, that ye be not judged and VERSE TWO: For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
What does God think of Judgment? Does He even tell us in scripture? Since all answers to life’s questions are answered in scripture it is good to know He loves judgment and it’s not a bad thing, only to those who do not like to live a right life. ( Psalm 37:28,30) For the Lord loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. Although those who love the Lord will suffer being persecuted for His name sake, the promise of eternal life for their souls keeps them from turning from God.
Moses was a person like you and I are and as he found favour in God’s eyes sought to bring many from Egypt out of bondage by the hand of God and he judged them. His father in law said it would be too much for him to judge so many and advised him to choose others who also loved God, and truth, and hate covetousness so Moses took his advice and appointed others with him to judge. (Exodus 18:13,17,18,21,22) And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening. And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee; for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness, and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge; so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
We are told to love our neighbor as ourselves and do not covet anything that is our neighbors. Scripture teaches us we should judge righteous judgment, and if we do not then we are allowing evil to rule. Without judging right and wrong actions wickedness would have free reign (Leviticus 19:15) Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, not honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbor.
Jesus (Yahshua) was amazed at how people were so good at discerning the signs of the sky for weather, yet to judge between right and wrong they leave it undone. Being able to discern between right and wrong is one of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit, it guides our life and gives protection when we are sensitive to the will of God. ( Luke 12:56,57 ) Ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that ye do not discern this time? Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right?”.
Now that we know it is of God to judge a matter justly, we know when people say your not suppose to judge they are not aware of the ways to have peace in their lives. We have just learned God does love judgment and expects us to apply it to our lives! (Psalm 119:162-165) I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil (Treasure). I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love. Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments. Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
How long will ye judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the land of the wicked. (Psalm 82:2-4).

Thank you for this excellent post, Julia. Matthew 7:1 is probably the most misquoted verse in scripture. Thank you for setting the record straight and balancing that verse with so many other verses in the Bible. How is a Christian not to make judgements on things so plainly taught in scripture? You are so right to point out that context is very important here.
I particularly like that you have mentioned the 10th commandment. Imagine a world where people were content with what they had and there was no such thing as coveting. Our world would be so much more peaceful. In a world that has become so materialistic, I have made a judgment that the 10th commandment (along with the others) is given by God and meant as part of God’s guideline for daily living.
Thank you again and God’s blessings…
Your comment Chris sums up the truth I was trying to explain how not only does God love judgment and justice, but that he expects us to apply it to our lives.
You say “Matthew 7:1 is probably the most misquoted verse in scripture.’ Amen to that as you understand the need to judge what is right is Gods plan and will for us all.
May His love and Grace continually guide you
Julia
Thank you for your kind words, Julia. I hope you have a great day!
