Is the saying “What goes around comes around” biblical?

Our whole life is lived upon this truth from scripture that there is a cause and effect since our actions are seen by an infinite God who is not blind. The saying we reap what we sow is an indication that what we do will sometime down the road come back to us (Galatians 6:7) Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

So is there any truth to the saying “What goes around comes around?” Thankfully we have the word of God that confirms this to be true. We see if anyone were to rob one who is poor, or if someone were to harm another who is either physically or mentally impaired that the one who causes them harm is repaid by the Lord Himself for their actions (Proverbs 22:22,23) Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate: For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

We learn to do what is right is never popular to those who have their heart set on their wicked ways. So does God see those who are doing their best to do what is right, and are those who choose wicked ways ever reprimanded? ( Proverbs 11:27-31) He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour: but he that seeketh mischief, it shall come unto him. He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch. He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner.

God has the ability to look upon our heart, and He alone knows the secret things man hopes to keep hid from Him. Samuel learned this important wisdom ( 1 Samuel 16:7) But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (Isaiah 29:15),(Psalm 94:21-23).

So we can ask “Does what goes around come around?” And when others harm us and trouble us does God even see it? As previous scripture has taught, we are given the advice to rest in the Lord as the day is coming when every knee will bow before the judgment seat of Christ. Those who have troubled us will get their just reward in the earth, and in eternity ( 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10).

So many lie and are not concerned to see heaven, but the word of God plainly tells us they are forfeiting their own soul and that is a high price to pay (Revelation 22:14,15).

For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.(Obadiah 15)

  1. Thank you for this post. I think this verse that you have quoted is a view into how God will hold all to account:

“God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Here is a good balancing verse:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.”

  2. Scripture really does remind us that we reap what we sow. God sees every heart and every action, and in His time justice and mercy are both fulfilled. 🙏

    • When I read your comment I thought how sometimes some forget “In His Time” all actions are weighed. Those who do His will are very aware it. 🙂

      Blessings Always Willie
