Idolatry

God Almighty has always been and is the God in heaven who is served by his people whose hearts and minds are set on him, and anything else is idolatry. When Paul was in Athens he noticed the people were worshiping “AN UNKNOWN GOD” and he went on to tell them of who God truly is: “Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars’ hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious. For as I passed by, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us”.(Acts 17:22-27).

Man has always sought to serve God in a way they could see, not realizing God wants to be served by our Faith and it is a way of trusting in what cannot be seen yet know is true. This is seen when Moses was delayed in returning from Mount Sinai after being with God that the people in camp below told Aaron they were going to make them a god and built a golden calf therefore corrupting themselves!  “And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, these be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves”.(Exodus 32:1,4,7).

Asa was a king in Jerusalem and it may of been difficult for him to go against his mother, yet he knew it was more important to serve God. When he saw his mother had made an idol in a grove he destroyed it and removed her from being queen. “And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the Lord, as did David his father. And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. And also Ma’-a-chah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron”.(1 Kings 15:11-13)…………………..(1 Thessalonians 2:4).

There is to the Believer only one God, yet the world offers many lords and gods. “For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled”.(1 Corinthians 8:5-7).

We need to be careful as to serve God through faith (trust) as he has asked us to do. “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in Spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship in Spirit and in truth”.(John 4:23,24). Man has always sought to serve God by what he can see, but true belief in God BY FAITH we serve God by trusting Him in the spiritual realm unseen yet aware He exists and hears us! Jesus is the Chief cornerstone: “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us”.(Hebrews 9:24). He is the mediator between us and God our Father………..

We need to be careful not to continue to serve God as our forefathers did, But serve God only who made heaven and earth for he does not dwell in wood and stone, but in heaven itself! “What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols? Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him”.(Habakkuk 2:18-20).
