If we are living in the world then why did Jesus say if we are His people we are not of the world?
We are instructed to keep ourselves unspotted from the world, but what does this mean? “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world”.(James 1:27). “I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world”. (John 17:14).
Jesus said it very well when saying we are not to be of the world’s ways and scripture clearly point’s out what exactly this means. If we are a Christian and follow Christs way we are then his servant. “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever”.(1 John 2:15-17).
When we are told to take up our cross daily and follow him, we need to be aware of just what we will encounter for suffering for the sake of our Lord! Jesus walked the earth doing what was right in the eyes of his Father and we too will not be liked for doing the very same thing! “Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel; And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake; Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me”.(Philippians 1:27-30).
It is very easy to live as the world does because we are prone to like that pat on the back if we follow the crowd, but it is not the crowd of unbeliever’s and those who serve the world through sin that will enter into heaven. “I Beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God”.(Romans 12:1,2).
When all is said and done in the final judgment, God will expect that his people had not conformed to the world ways, but stayed on the narrow path that led us back to him which kept us safe from the plagues that would take many! “And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities”.(Revelation 18:4,5).
