The Talebearer
We all know them, those who cannot wait to get in front of us to divulge a secret that should be kept after heard. God does not look kindly on such behaviour. For what gossip does is make a bad person look good and a good person look bad! Is it any wonder God frowns upon this? (Leviticus 19:16) Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbor: I am the Lord.
Ever hear a person tell you something and you know they have just spoke something they probably shouldn‘t have and when you ask them where did they hear it they grin and say Oh’ A little bird told me. Did you know this reply has come from scripture? (Ecclesiastes 10:20) Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
A talebearer is one who has a tale to tell and bears no remorse to tell it. It’s almost as if its their job if they don’t get that tale out before the day is over, and a sense of pride is given such a person and we all know what God thinks of a person full of pride. In fact we know in Proverbs God lists seven things which he hates and one is to sow discord among brethren, and nothing separates people more than a gossip spreading their news about another! (Proverbs 6:19).A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
Whether they are called a gossip or a talebearer they are one and the same to God. They both cause destruction with their mouth as they reveal secrets of another best left unsaid. (Proverbs 11:12,13) He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbor: but a man of understanding holdeth his peace. A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.
The following verse reminds me of something my Mother always said of those who liked wrong more than right and that was …..If you give people enough rope they will hang themselves! This statement is so true after seeing this come to pass at different times in my life when watching those set on evil. We know that a snake charmer uses enchantment to control the snake from biting, but did you know that a babbler (gossip) is just as bad as causing deep wounds with their mouth in another way therefore causing pain to another. (Ecclesiasties 10:11,12) Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better. The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.
Scripture has so much wisdom we can apply to our daily life and yet when we look at the shape the world is in today it is easy to see alot of bibles are remaining unopened! God Bless all who love the word of God and apply it to their life daily.
