For those who only go by what they can see, it is hard to understand that as believers we the people are the temple of the living God and Jesus is the chief CORNER STONE (1 Corinthians 3:16,17) Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
When God says we are built upon a foundation with Christ Himself as the corner stone it’s not easy to deny it when God asked Job if he was around when he laid the foundations of the earth and asked him who laid the corner stone? (Job 38:4-7) Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
Jesus plainly told the Jews he was even before Abraham therefore saying He was before the foundation of the world and was with God the Father (John 8:56-58) Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. Then said the Jews unto him, thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I say unto you, before Abraham was, I am.
We are told that Faith is believing in the unseen more than what the eye can see (Hebrews 11:1) So as we look through spiritual eyes it is easy to understand Christ is the corner stone of a spiritual church. It is a building not made of wood and stone, but is built up of a group of people who have accepted Christ as their Saviour and are as living stones (1 Peter 2:5-9)Ye also as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner. And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
Jesus is known as the stone the builders have rejected, yet there is no other way into heaven without accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour (Acts 4:11,12) This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Jesus is head of the true church of God and has shed His blood to purchase that church. (Acts 20:28) Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the holy ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which He hath purchased with His own blood. After overturning the money changers in the temple He was not only teaching them not to buy and sell there, but that if they would destroy the temple then He would rebuild it in three days when He would rise again in the resurrection (John 2:19-21) Jesus answered the Jews and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body.
Even if you do not want to believe Jesus is the temple of God it will be revealed in heaven for there will not be a building to go to as so many people believe, but will see for themselves that Jesus truly died to build this spiritual church the builders rejected as they view God Almighty and Jesus as the temple in heaven! (Revelation 21:22,23) And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the lamb is the light thereof.
The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:22-24).
Excellent post! Very well said. Amen.
Thank you Chuck! It had to be taught what the true cornerstone of the church is, since so many flock to their weekly meetings of brick and mortar buildings for an hour a week losing the full meaning of what Christ died to build His spiritual church. God Bless You.
