We may not consider God to have a heart and soul like man yet He does, but the difference is man has a free will and at times chooses unrighteousness while God is always righteous and holy!(Genesis 2:7) And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.(Psalm 11:5).
Although some may think the spirit and soul are separate in their meaning, they are one and the same to God. In Ecclesiastes 12:6,7 we learn when we die we return unto the dust and our spirit returns to God. When Rachel died giving birth we learn it is also our soul as well that returns unto God when we pass away. (Genesis 35:16-20) And they journeyed from Bethel; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour. And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also. And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin. And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem. And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave unto this day.
Here are words from the book of Jeremiah to show us God truly does have a heart and soul, and how He will one day make an eternal covenant with His people and they will not depart from Him!(Jeremiah 32:37-41) Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely: And they shall be my people, and I will be their God: And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me. Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole soul.
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. (Psalm 51:10-13).
