Whether we’re in an actual prison house, or our soul is being held captive by something or someone Christ died and has set us free! (Psalm 68:18-20) Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them. Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah. He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto GOD the Lord belong the issues from death.
Paul and Silas were in a literal prison yet their Spirits were not held in bondage, and as they began to sing praises at midnight a great earthquake shook the prison doors loose! (Acts 16:23-28). And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them. And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed. And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.
It is written if God be for us who can be against us. We see these words are very true as God was with Joseph in prison and showed him his mercy, and was given favor in the sight of the prison keepers (Genesis 39:20-23) And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison. But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.
We are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God, yet a truly repentant heart God will not despise. Do not worry about the chaos that surrounds you in your situation or what others may think, as God is not like men for he looks on the heart and not on our appearance and He alone can set us free! (1 Samuel 16:7). But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord’s freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ’s servant. Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men. Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God. (1 Corinthians 7:22-24).
