The Least

When Gideon was going to battle with the Midianites and had 22,000 men God told him he had too many for the battle! And then when the fearful and afraid departed it was lowered to ten thousand which once again was still too many. It was only when it was narrowed down to three hundred men God was well pleased. Oddly enough the ones who were chosen for the battle were tried by God first and humbled by having them lap up water as a dog. God moves on behalf of the least in this life, for they rely on Gods strength and not their own, they are the least seen and heard among many! It was Gideons least that got the victory (Judges 7:2-7) And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me. Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand. And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go. So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink. And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water. And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.

What a wonderful lesson we read in Luke of the importance of the least in the eyes of God! When the disciples started reasoning of who would be the greatest in the kingdom the Lord showed the example of an innocent child. (Luke 9:46-48) Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him, And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

When God took the Israelites out of the bondage of Egypt He declared it was because He loved them and they were the fewest in number. Ever notice when the wicked ban together there are many yet when God’s people need assistance it takes less to bring an army of fools down. As He said when two or three are gathered together in His name there is He in the midst of them! (Deuteronomy 7:6,7) For thou are  an holy people unto the Lord thy God: the Lord thy God hath chosen thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the face of the earth. The Lord did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people.

Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. (Matthew 18:19,20).

Thank you for sharing these thoughtful insights. The story of Gideon and his reduced army is a powerful reminder that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. It’s remarkable how God chose just three hundred men to achieve victory, showing that it’s not about our numbers or strength, but about relying on Him.
