Fear God and walk in His ways

It is written even if the days of one who does evil is prolonged it profits them little, but those who fear God will receive blessings and it will be well with them! (Ecclesiastes 8:12,13) Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him: But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.

It was a humble God fearing woman named Mary God chose to bear His only begotten Son, and she knew His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation (Luke 1:45-54) And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy.

We are to fear God only and not people! God alone who has the power to destroy our body and soul in hell fire, a power in which no man has the ability to do! (Matthew 10:28-33) And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

To fear man is to not fear God! (Isaiah 51:7,12,13) Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

God Himself clearly tells us He will be swift to judge those who choose not to fear Him, for those who oppress the widow, the fatherless and falsely accuse others judgment will ensue ( Malachi 3:5) And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

  1. What many don’t realize is that “Fear” means more than to “just be afraid”, it also means “to revere” also. “Fear” as used in most of the New Testament:

Strong’s Concordance G5399 – Original Word: φοβέω – Transliteration: phobéō – Phonetic Spelling: fob-eh’-o[φοβέω] – from G5401; to frighten, i.e. (passively) to be alarmed; by analogy, to be in awe of, i.e. revere

If one is “in awe of and reverent” to the Lord then there is reason to “fear not” but without “awe and reverence” there is reason to “fear”, hence Proverbs 1:7 and others: 1:29, 9:10, 10:27 and many others.

    • Thank you for this wonderful explanaition. So
many good passages to confirm the importance to fear and revere the Lord. Verse 10:27 is very powerful in saying our life is prolonged when we fear the Lord.

      Be Blessed
