Part of the way God knows those who are his is by giving names to his people. Some names are for all to see such as the one given to those who serve him as the name Christian. This allows others to know you are a servant of Christ and God is the center of your life. The name Christian first came to the disciples as they gathered together at Antioch. “Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: And when he had found him, he brought him unto An’-ti-och. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in An’-ti-och”.
While other names are given by God himself as we see Abram’s name changed to Abraham and would go on to become a father of many nation’s and whose children would be so numerous as the sand by the sea. To this day we as Christians are known spiritually as the children of Abraham. “And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee”.(Genesis 17:2-5). “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise”.(Galatians 3:26-29).
Although we know of the city of Jerusalem here and now, as Christians we await the New Jerusalem that is the city of God where there will be no more tears and no one will ever die. A place that all who lived by faith will dwell one day after they have lived their life as though in a foreign land here will one day be for all eternity in this holy city of God! The disciple John was blessed to of been able to see this place and describes it so beautifully! “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away”.(Revelation 21:1-4). The people of faith who have gone before us knew there would be such a place. “These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore GOd is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city”.(Hebrews 11:13,16).
