LEAVEN: To embellish, To mingle or permeate with modifying, To Infuse.
In Jesus day people were told to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. The reason being that what they taught were doctrines contrary to the word of God. Jesus spoke often times in parables to the people and when he said watch out for the leaven of the scribes is because they were taking the word of God and making it into a false doctrine that Jesus did not teach. The leaven of the scribes would cause their teaching to grow into big lies and stories so embellished that it angered Jesus and said they were blind guides and hypocrites. “But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation”(Matthew 23:13,14). Jesus continues on and on about the deceitfulness of their doctrine, and yet today we have among us the same doctrine overshadowed by the teaching as though Jesus is all love and never got upset! He most certainly be saying the same message today to bring about his Fathers way!
As a christian we are told that we too would be cast out of the church’s of today and we have the finger pointed at us as though we are teaching wrong. This is the persecution Jesus spoke of would happen and it is alive an well here today as we see people fighting for same sex marriage in the house of God and there are some table that could be overturned as in Christs day as churches have Zumba classes at their churches and other like things which have nothing to do with learning of the word of God! Jesus tried so desperately to teach of the dangers of the puffed up doctrine being taught and even his disciples at times did not grasp what he was telling them. “Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened? Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him twelve”.(Mark 8:14-19).
For anyone who has baked bread know the importance of adding yeast for it to rise, and Jesus taught of the kingdom of God compared to leaven for as one who focuses only on the unseen as through faith they are adding to their life to come eternal life and realizes the temporary things this life offers. “Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof. Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened”.(Matthew 13:31-33).
